The words of the wise prod us to live well.
They’re like nails hammered home, holding life together.
They are given by God, the one Shepherd. Ecc 12:11 The Message
We know who they are. The ones that bring wisdom and calm to a situation. The ones who seem to bypass the gossip and the snarky comments and go straight for the essence of the problem or conflict. The ones that promote peace and harmony. The ones who speak truth. The Wise ones – that encourage us to live well – because they have been given to us by God – the one Shepherd.
But regarding anything beyond this, dear friend, go easy. There’s no end to the publishing of books, and constant study wears you out so you’re no good for anything else. The last and final word is this:
Do what he tells you. Ecc 12:12-13
And if they (the wise ones) are giving us a Word from God, do we listen? Do we do what they encourage us to do? Or are we seeking our own answers from self-help books and “face” book and those who agree with our version of the story? Are we just stirring the “pot” by telling all our friends about our situation and how “wronged” we have been and how “terrible” the other person(s) acted?
And that’s it. Eventually God will bring everything that we do out into the open and judge it according to its hidden intent, whether it’s good or evil. Ecc 12:14
So practice grace. Look for the intent in others actions. Was there intent to harm – or was it merely a lack of knowledge or a different view of the solution to a problem? And if the person was intending harm, what is the “intent” of your response? Remember . . . some day, maybe today, God will bring our intent out into the open.
So in this day . . . May we fear God . . . by seeking Him, by discerning His wisdom through the reading of His Word, by prayer and encouragement of others, by keeping our hearts clean and by practicing grace.
