Story Time!

Never Without a Story

26-29 Then Jesus said, “God’s kingdom is like seed thrown on a field by a man who then goes to bed and forgets about it. The seed sprouts and grows—he has no idea how it happens. The earth does it all without his help: first a green stem of grass, then a bud, then the ripened grain. When the grain is fully formed, he reaps—harvest time!

30-32 “How can we picture God’s kingdom? What kind of story can we use? It’s like a pine nut. When it lands on the ground it is quite small as seeds go, yet once it is planted it grows into a huge pine tree with thick branches. Eagles nest in it.”

33-34 With many stories like these, he presented his message to them, fitting the stories to their experience and maturity. He was never without a story when he spoke. When he was alone with his disciples, he went over everything, sorting out the tangles, untying the knots.

The Message Mark 4:26-34

What was the purpose of Jesus’ method of teaching? Obviously, it was to teach a lesson about the subject matter. But wasn’t it also to guide us in how we share our faith with others? How do we do that?

With a story – our story – unique to us – designed by God – perfect for the situation He places us in – filled with our mistakes and God’s grace.

If we can picture our lives as the backside of God’s tapestry, we will understand that there is a story that the Weaver has designed that we just don’t know in its fullness. It is our story. Uniquely ours. It is interwoven with other’s stories – people that the Weaver places in our path – whose strand intersects with ours.

Each strand weaves its way through the tapestry. Each strand has a unique path – none are the same although for a period of time, the strands might mesh to make a beautiful splash of color or form the critical juncture with another strand. Some day our strand will complete its place in the tapestry.

The tapestry of life is so complex that we have no way to control it. When we do try to control it, we lose sight of the purpose of being in the tapestry – to go where the Weaver directs us in order for the tapestry to be completed in accordance with its original design.

Each day can be viewed as a day of weaving. Each day we have the choice to cooperate with the Weaver – to follow the example of the Weaver’s son, Jesus – to exhibit his love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness, kindness, goodness and self-control – to obey the pull through the loom so the going goes smoothly except when it doesn’t which may have been the point.

It is the journey that is important and whom we have partnered with that makes the difference. Each day our eyes can focus on Jesus, the one who shows us how to live by making each moment holy – whose love, mercy, and grace form the path of each strand.

We also have the choice to do it “our” way – twisting our way through our day. Our way is the hard way – the way of turbulence and restlessness. The Weaver will still be in control but it will be difficult for us when He straightens out our twisted strand. Of course, sometimes the straightening has nothing to do with us because it is caused by the choices of others who may have chosen their own way.

But regardless of the choices we make or others make, the Weaver is in total control and the Tapestry will be completed in accordance with the Weaver’s pattern, not ours and not anyone else’s.

So back to the original question – how do we share our faith?

Like Jesus did – in the form of a story. Our story of love, grace, and hope – of disappointments, trials and tribulations. Not in a complaining way, but in a way that brings hope and comfort to someone else.

Our journey intersects with other’s journey at the direction of the Weaver. At those intersections, we are to come up along side the other strand bonding with them as Jesus has bonded with us in order to bring glory to the Weaver whose masterpiece is in the making. We are to treat the other strand as we desire to be treated. Our desire comes from the Weaver, our direction from the Weaver’s son and our power flows from the Weaver’s Spirit.

So share your story – woven by God through the love and grace of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit!
