Construction Zone

I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me. John 14:6

I waited at road construction the other day. It was 90+ degrees and I was praying for the flag holder – what a difficult job! My air conditioner was pumping cool air into my car and I was quite comfortable but that flagger was red faced and sweating.   It was a long wait because there was a “follow me” vehicle. Soon, it was my turn to follow the lead car. It was a windy road and there were multiple work crews on a 2-mile stretch. It was good to have the lead car because we kept switching lanes.

As I sat in contemplation with God today, I was reminded of that experience. God was helping me understand it as a parable. Jesus is the “lead car”. Those of us who are followers of Jesus are following Him through the road construction of life. Life is a windy road, with unexpected turns and lane changes. Jesus leads us through the twists and turns, the hazards and road blocks – through the rough patches and pot holes. As we experience this journey we are bumping up against God’s gift to us through Jesus – eternal life!

Eternal life is not something we “attain” at death but something that we have already received as believers in Jesus Christ. It is not taken from us when we screw up or hit a pot hole. It is here. It is now. It is real. We are His.

Ryan Stevenson describes it this way in his song “No Matter What”:

A lot of us grew up believing
At any moment we could lose it all
And at the drop of a hat
God might turn his back and move on
A lot of us feel like we blew it
Thinking that we’re just too far gone
But I want you to know
There’s still a hope for you now

No matter what you’ve done
You can’t erase His love
Nothing can change it
You’re not separated
No matter what

There’s never been a better time to get honest
There’s never been a better time to get clean
So come as you are
Run to the cross and be free
Oh be free

No matter what you’ve done
You can’t erase His love
Nothing can change it
You’re not separated
No matter where you run
He’s always holding on
You’re still a daughter, You’re still a son
No matter what

Don’t know what you’ve been taught
Don’t know what you’ve been told
All I know is my God
Will never let go of you
And I don’t know what you’ve seen
Don’t know what you’ve been through
All I know is my God
Will never let go of you
He’ll never let go

One day, we will all reach the end of the construction zone of life. In the meantime, the key to persevering is to keep our eyes on the one who knows the way – the one who leads us through the trials and tribulations of life – the one who deliverers us to the other side of each of these experiences – Jesus.

All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” John 6:37-40
